Solids, Liquids, Gases Activity

Diet Coke and Mentos Geyser

Today, we tried to make a Diet Coke and Mentos Geyser! It didn't work as well as we hoped so we are going to modify the experiment to try and get more height on our Geyser. Watch this space.

How this happens:
Soda drinks are pumped full of carbon dioxide at the drink factory to make them fizzy. It doesn't get released from the liquid until you pour it into a glass and drink it, some also gets released when you open the lid (more if you shake it up beforehand). This means that there is a whole lot of carbon dioxide gas just waiting to escape the liquid in the form of bubbles.

Dropping something into the Diet Coke speeds up this process by both breaking the surface tension of the liquid and also allowing bubbles to form on the surface area of the Mentos. Mentos candy pieces are covered in tiny dimples (a bit like a golf ball), which dramatically increases the surface area and allows a huge amount of bubbles to form.

Milk Experiment

Last week, Room 12 did an experiment using milk, food colouring and dishwashing liquid. Some children have written explanations about it.

The Milk Explosion Experiment !!! - Melvina

How to do the 'Milk Explosion Experiment'

Firstly, you need ingredients and those ingredients are: milk, food colouring, ( red ,blue, yellow and green), bowl, dish washing liquid and a cotton bud. The food colouring you choose are optional but only four colours. Next, you put the food colouring but you need to put them seperately or the experiment won't work. Then, you get your cotton bud and with one side put dish washing liquid on to it and then carefully put the cotton bud in to the middle and watch what happens.

It all mixes together and twirls around. This happens because of the milks fat and protein. They keep bumping together to find molecules. Scientists have an example of telling about fats and proteins, so you can get the idea of what they are trying to say. Scientists say, that when are at a disco you find a new friend to dance with, so that is what happens to the molecules. The fat and protein molecules are dancing around. This is a physical change because it can not change back to how it was before.

Thats how we make Swirling Milk.

Burst of colours

How do you make milk colourful?

Firstly, you get a bowl or a dish and put in some milk about halfway. Next, you add some food colouring green, blue, yellow, and red. Only put one drop of each colour. After that, you put dish washing liquid into the bowl and watch it burst out with colours.

What is happening is a physical change because it is still milk and it is still food colouring even though they are moving around. Milk has fat and protien. When the fat and protien bump together they find molecules.

You might even want to try this fun science experiment at home. Give it a try. You can tell your friends, auntys, cousins and uncles. Watch the teriffic, magnifient sight inside the bowl. 'What a delightful thing you have made' thats what your Mum or Dad might say.

Colour Disco!!!

Do you know how to make all the colours explode? The ingredients are dishwashing liquid, a bowl, food colouring and a cotton bud. Firstly, you put in milk and then you put in the food colouring into the milk. Then, put in the dishwashing liquid. Then you will see the reaction starting. The reaction is starting because of the soap molecules are bouncing off each other to find fat from the milk. I liked it because I saw a rainbow in a bowl.

Cross Country 11/5/11

Well at least it didn't hail!

Room 12 did amazingly well in our school cross country. All children who ran the race, finished the race, despite the pouring rain and the near falls in the mud. Their attitude was brilliant with many reflections stating "at least I could have a drink". Stay tuned for some awesome recounts! A special congratulations goes to Brody who placed 1st for the 7 year old boys and Aatif who placed 2nd for the 7 year old boys and to Cheyenne who placed 3rd in the 8 year old girls! Cheyenne has qualified for the interschool cross country, where she will compete against children from other schools. Room 12 wish her all the best!

Well done again to all Room 12 children, they have been running every morning and their efforts showed on the day... and I must say, we looked GREAT in our new pod t-shirts! go Karekare Kahu's!
